“I head the work package on data analysis and management for BEATS. I always say it is the easiest part of building a beamline, but maybe that is just because I enjoy working with data. We have to design the system, integrate it into the existing infrastructure, take care of the engineering for data collection, and manage the storage. We also work on how to convert the data into a format that is useful and exploitable by the users. We have quite a bit of flexibility in the project, and our main concern is to have in place, the policies, and the system running before the start of beamline operation. We are on schedule with no major difficulties on the horizon. My experience in Jordan has taught me that nothing can be taken for granted and difficulties crop up where you least expect them. I am from Cyprus, and I believe our culture is situated roughly midway between Europe and the Middle East. On the BEATS project, we all work together smoothly. Maybe that’s because everyone is used to working in this mix of cultures and we all put the science first. Our resources are limited, and sometimes our vision of the future is a bit hazy, but we keep moving forward on a day-to-day basis. Everyone working at SESAME is committed to making the facility a success. For most of them, it’s not just a job, it’s a way of life.”
